NADILIYA - VAMPIRE FROM BAGHDAD
Taken from "Ghost Night" (73-75str.)
It happened long ago. Summer. When in the gardens of Baghdad all night singing nightingales, and the air was filled with the aroma of roses.
Some merchant no longer trust his wife, whom he loved. And because of this he stepped onto the road that led him to the heart of darkness. Here is his story.
He was called a merchant Abul-Hassan, and her - Nadill. He was a rich and powerful. She - the daughter of an old scientist, whose nondescript little house was lost in a poor neighborhood of the city. But when a rich merchant in the spring for the first time saw her, the beauty of this woman bewitched him. Shortly thereafter, he took Nadill from its quiet, timid parents and made his wife.
The house where he brought her, it was countless rooms and courtyards, but Nadill seemed quite this happy. She just huddled in the most shady, dark corners and all the hot summer days only concern was to hide in cool, shady places away from the sun, which shone dazzlingly on the white walls and stubborn rays filtering through the thick fan palms. She ate almost nothing. In a sleepy reverie she did not notice was served to her. Reluctantly, as if forcing herself, she went out of his secluded refuge to meet her husband.
But when the daylight disappeared and lighted the lamp, Nadill animation. Refreshing evening breezes, seemed to return her to life, revived, n she becomes the tender and affectionate wife, which wanted Abul-Hassan. With a playful smile, she beckoned him into bed. Delighted with Abul-Hassan forget her daily apathy, explaining this sweltering heat of the day. And her strength restored, he believed, life-giving evening coolness. Dream merchant every night was a deep, calm and dreamless.
But one day, Abul-Hassan, it suddenly awoke in the night. His wife was not there, he could not find it n the other rooms. For some time, Abul-Hassan lay motionless. But gradually the soft rustle of palm fronds outside again imposed on him sleep.
He woke up again only when the viscous singing muedzzinov floated over Gog comes from the minaret to minaret, calling the righteous Muslims at morning prayer, Nadill just returned. He secretly from under her lashes watched her as she took off her cloak and veil, and did not even budge, pretending to be asleep when she dived into bed.
The following night she disappeared again. On the third night he followed her.
She easily ran down the street, passing orchards and disappearing behind the corners, as if secretly want a date. Abul-Hassan did not lag behind. She rushed down the winding
along the quiet streets of the bazaar is now the avenue, and finally stopped at the gates of the walled house in the old quarter of the city. Gates seemed to themselves before it opened.
Staying in the shadows, hiding, Abul-Hassan followed his wife into the courtyard and down the steep stone stairs and a long corridor. Here he stopped suddenly, realizing what he commits a sacrilege. It was a ce-Main crypt. On the walls were a number of sarcophagi.
He slowly moved forward, following the faint tinkle of silver bracelets that are worn on the ankles Nadill, and for the rustle of her silk trousers. Pretty soon he reached the archway. Tinkling quiet. Confused, he stopped and began to look around.
Opened before him a stone vault, the dimly lit entrenched in a wall niche funeral lamps. And there, among the piles of human bones and burial offerings, kneeling by his wife. When Abul-Hassan saw what she was doing, his heart pounding.
Breathing heavily and moaning, Nadill pulled out of the coffin the body of the deceased. She pulled out her hand and with eager growl dug his little sharp teeth into the gray dead flesh.
Abul-Hassan froze. Recovering himself, he slipped out of the crypt, and drove home. All this long night he lay awake, tormented by dark and disturbing thoughts. At dawn, his wife once again slipped into bed, flushed and heavy, swollen from sleepless nights over the centuries. No, he did not tell her, but the whole
next day watched her. It was the same as before - absent, lax, hiding in the shadows and awakened only shadows lengthen and dusk.
Abul-Hassan suggested that she eat. She refused, but she smiled at him affectionately. And then, when he saw a glimmer of her predatory white sharp teeth, he could not restrain himself:
- Maybe you want the meat of the dead, wife? - He asked.
She stiffened. Her eyes flashed, her lips parted in a terrible wide grin distorted her pretty face. And suddenly, as light as a cat, she jumped at it.
Abul-Hassan was ready for it. His crooked knife, he stabbed his wife. He buried her there, without due ceremony outside the walls of his house, so as not to defile it. If the servants and noticed something they did not dare open his mouth. Abul-Hassan was a stern master, and a strange, silent woman, whom he brought into the house and made his wife, not won any of their love, or location.
But the misadventures Abul-Hassa on not over. He understood it on the third night after the murder. When he awakened from a troubled sleep, looked out the window at the flashing between the leaves of palm trees at night the stars his wife, or rather, a kind of ghostly likeness of his wife, came to him.
It emerged at the foot of the bed and stood up among the pillows and carpets, carpeted floor. White shirt with bloody rags clinging to her body, bleeding wound in his side, which caused her Abul-Hassan, one arm hung motionless, his face was like a frozen mask, lip dropped, his eyes sunken. She moved, but not as a living - jerk, angularly, as a puppet.
The Bad stench of decomposing-body came from her.
Gently smiling dead mouth, she reached the bed where he lay trembling with fear Abul-Hassan. She took a deep crawled to him, wheezing and muttering something. Revolving stench grew stronger, rattling louder and louder. She bent over him, and sharp its teeth almost touched his neck.
Abul-Hassan threw a ghost from his bed and he jumped to his feet, calling for the servants, and requiring fire. A moment later the room was filled with people, and ghostly creature has disappeared.
But Abul-Hassan has already realized what had happened. Nadill while still alive to be reunited with evil forces. Man of the birth, however, she was hiding from daylight, and flourished only in darkness and to the same taste for carrion. After his death she was completely taken prisoner forces of darkness, and they used it in their dark purposes, and to meet their nefarious desires. She became a vampire, a soulless corpse, feed on human blood.
Abul-Hassan went to his father Nadill and forced him to tell everything he knew about his daughter. The old man confessed that his daughter was a witch, who gave up his soul to Satan, and has since become the slave of a secret vice. And such was his diabolical power that even his own father is forced to remain silent and endure.
Together father and husband dug the body and burned it, and dispelled the ashes, so that there is nothing that would rise from the earth and wander about the world, when good people are asleep. Abul-Hassan, threw the ashes into the river, claimed that during his on
south to the Persian Gulf and melted in a huge sea washes the edge of the land.
Nadill never worried about living.

Vampire of Taylfingena
Engelhen - angel
Vampire of Taylfingena
This article I found on the pages torn out of a certain old magazine whose name I never managed to learn. Its author Sergey Pervushin. Here I will publish it in the reduction
Raven
Events unfolded like a well-organized criminal (or would say now - espionage and sabotage) shares. The purpose of the group of young people was a cemetery in the small town Taylfingene, near Stuttgart. It was early spring 1898, the day was coming to an end, when someone knocked at the door of the hut. Under the pretext of All Souls' cousin saw cut to an elderly caretaker bottle''Doppel-Kummell.'' Late visitor only pretended to drink a par - in the wine was mixed with sleeping pills. Seeing that the old man snoring peacefully, his head on the table, the visitor gently carried it to the bed, curled wick of a lamp. I lit a lantern brought to''Die Fledermaus''came out of the lodge and several times waved a lantern. Immediately out of the bushes on the other side of the road came out a few people and headed into the depths of the cemetery - it was clear that they know where to go.
We stopped at the snow-covered grave, lit a stone stele at the head -''Fraulein''Celia Groningen. Dates of birth and death. Wishes of peace, the promise of memory ...
But the peace of the grave was disturbed. Lighted a couple of lanterns, shovels vgryzlis in frozen ground. People are displaced each other, hurrying to finish their sinister business. What they sought in this girl's grave?
To answer this question we need to retreat in the recent past - for six months.
At the beginning of hunting season the company of local hunters, who were accompanied by three women in the early morning went to the lower swampy woods. They were divided, like assigning seats. But the 23-year-old Celia somehow excused myself and was on the line of fire, which was fatal.
Ranks of the criminal police Württemberg arrived promptly. Careful investigation revealed no malicious intent. The girl was killed by his own negligence.
But the culprit - the son of wealthy parents - was surrounded by scorn and soon much - then left.
The dead - from the impoverished gentry - served as a governess in the family of the mayor. Blond and blue-eyed, slim, pretty, she enjoyed the sympathy of citizens. Older lady called it''Engelhen''(angel).
The unexpected death caused general sorrow. The funeral was modest (she was an orphan as a child). Gradually, the tragedy and about her began to forget ...
Six months after these events, the tomb was opened unhappy Celia - secretly, at night, without informing the authorities.
One local physician, Dr. Seifert looked through their records of past years. In the fashion image of some graphs he drew a curve showing the number of infant deaths in the county. The number of unexpected departure from life, and remains unexplained, sudden increase in a few years ago. Special Commission of the pillars of the local medicine was unable to determine the cause. The cases were continued, parents of newborns with fear and daily prayers expected sad fate.
Assumptions were made about some unknown''miasma''. (For example, continued to call agents of infectious diseases, despite the opening of Pasteur, Koch and other great fighters for human health.) But there was no valid reason.
In general, the medicine was powerless.
And suddenly these strange deaths ceased. This coincided with the death of dear Fraulein Groningen. Dr. Seifert is not terrified assumption of what kind of communication - morally, he was ready for it. He was very interested in the occult, ordered from Berlin books and magazines about the mysterious phenomena.
People period,''hairdryer de Siecle''- the end of the century (in this case - 19th) - were inclined to perceive reality through the prism of magic and terrible. The then art-known scientist V. Fritsche defined as''poetry of nightmares and horrors.''
And Seifert was not surprised when according to its archive found that sinister''epidemic''of deaths began soon after his arrival in a provincial Taylfingen Fraulein Celia.
Careful investigation conducted by them showed that a modest and pleasant Fraulein Groningen visited the families of children who died before the accident occurred there. Her visits were quite understandable - she had a degree of care for infants and willingly shared their knowledge and skills to young mothers.
Seifert compared the facts that are encountered by chance. To think that my dear Fraulein was the bearer of some malevolent''miasma,''the doctor did not.
The conclusion was simple - it was a concentration of some dark forces, some deadly scourge. Most likely she was a vampire.
The fact that the bodies of the dead (but according to Seifert - killed her) babies no more sinister teeth marks, the then literature was simple - the vampire can suck the blood, and some''vitality'', citing the victim to death.
It was a harbinger of energy vampirism, so well known to us.
Almost a week Seifert doubted, tormented by his discovery. Then, secretly briefed with their terrible predictions of several inconsolable fathers. Do not turn to the authorities (''do not believe it''), church (''tried for blasphemy, incompatible with the Christian faith''), scientists (''just laugh at''), - reasonable fear of impeding their plans.
A plan, went to the cemetery ...
When the grave was dug, the coffin was decided not to raise the top. Crowbar carefully picked up the lid. You can imagine their dismay when they saw that the corpse, resting in the ground more than six months, was not changed. Deceased, it seemed, just sleeping. There was no smell, no signs of decomposition.
''Her face shone with almost unearthly purity''- said later one of grobokapateley.
''What, staring at this''angel''? - Rudely shouted one surrounding the excavated pit. - Appearances are deceiving! It is clear that it is a vampire!''
He jumped down and, shuddering with disgust, stabbed advance made aspen stake in the heart of the immortal monster. The corpse did not move, not huddled in convulsions, did not utter a cry, zhivopisuemy in stories about such actions.
Cover quickly closed. The coffin was sprinkled with holy water, allegedly impeding further escapades vampire.
''We had, of course, to cut off her hand and foot. The National Council for the ancient paths of the intersection of evil. But we decided not to such to such actions. Only when he saw a dead Miss Celia, I'm sorry that took part in all this. The doctor was so convincing in its conclusions ...'', - said afterwards one of the members of this grim procedure.
Tomb in order. Rammed earth, covered with dry leaves. Laid back decayed wreaths. The next morning, nothing could raise suspicions that the dumping of grossly desecrated. Even with the noble goal of understandable revenge fathers.
For a while everything was kept secret. After a month and a half then I could not stand the conscience of one of the participants''graveyard''of the action, whether his wife mixed confession and gossip. The priest found himself facing a serious dilemma - keep the secrecy of confession and blasphemous rite that is incompatible with Christian dogma, or notify the church authorities.
He asked the bishop to give him an audience and told in detail everything that had to learn not only in the confessional, but in a careful discussion with other participants in the rite. The bishop assured him, saying that such actions against alleged vampires were widespread in the Middle Ages. But the important message - a vampire in the neighborhood!
Under the pretext of visiting one of the local barons, the bishop personally arrived Taylfingen. It was assembled a narrow range of representatives of local authorities - only those in the fortress of faith which could not doubt. Taking an oath on the Bible all the participants planned exhumation, the bishop blessed them. Other way to verify the allegations had been terrible.
Again at night, the light of lanterns, the tomb was excavated. When the coffin was opened, the eyes of those present presented itself fully decomposing body of the deceased. Her breasts are still stuck aspen stake. The bishop was beside himself with indignation and hastily withdrew from the re-desecration.
There was a meeting at which all participants of the first hide the coffin offered to repeat under oath that they had discovered had not changed for six months in the grave the corpse. They believed that the expansion began after the vampire's heart was pierced with an aspen stake, that is, he was killed. They have not repented of their deed, confident that their actions were correct ...

The next morning his son told this to the neighbors. That night my father did not appear, but the next, he again appeared and asked him to eat. Local chiefs, or the judge, after learning about the incident, sent a dispatch to the Belgrasky Tribunal, and from there to the village sent two servants and the executioner, to take the matter ... Uncovered the graves of all those who died in the past six weeks. When they reached the grave of an old man, was that he was lying with open eyes, all red and breathing, although it remains motionless, as if dead, from all this concluded that he was a real vampire. Vampire - Governor
Vampire - Governor
Jealous husband rose from the grave to avenge his wife ...
In the early 19 th century in Russia there was one of the worst cases of vampirism, which has ever recorded. Governor of Charles was a man of sixty, spiteful, cruel and jealous tyrant
Invested with despotic power, he used it without restraint as suggested to him his animal instincts. And he fell in love with the pretty daughter of his subordinate officials. Although she was engaged to a young man whom she loved, the tyrant forced her father to consent to marriage, and the poor victim, despite her despair, became his wife, have become apparent with might and main his jealous nature, he beat her and kept her trapped for weeks in her room and forbade her to see someone not otherwise, as in his presence. Finally he fell ill and died. But when he realized that his end was approaching, he made her swear that she will marry will not work, and with dreadful oaths, he threatened her that if she marries, violating an oath, he would return to her from the grave and kill her. He was buried in the cemetery beyond the river, and a young widow no further trouble had not experienced before as long as nature does not overcame her fears and she was heeding the pleas of his former lover, has renewed her engagement with him. At night, after the customary celebration of the betrothal, when all had gone to bed, the old country estate was awakened by the desperate cries coming from her room. Broke the door and found the poor woman lying in blood in a dead faint. At the same time we could hear the coach rattled out of the yard. At the woman's body was found black and blue bruises, as if from emergencies, from a small puncture in the neck oozing drops of blood. When consciousness returned to her, she reported that her deceased husband's friend came into the room as if such appearance, as in life, except that I was terribly pale, he reproached her for her inconstancy, and then beat her and pinched cruelly . Her story did not believe it, but the next morning the guards, set out at the end of the bridge connecting both banks of the river, was told that just before the onset of midnight black coach with six horses furiously swept past them toward the city, not answering the cry of the prison. The new governor, who did not believe this story of a ghost, nonetheless take precautions, doubling the guard at the end of the bridge. However, night after night repeating the same de, and the soldiers carrying the guard, said that the barrier to their outpost at the bridge itself rises, despite their efforts to stop. At the same time every night and the coach rattled drove into the courtyard of the old home guard, including the widow's family and servants, fell into a deep sleep and every morning the young victim had bruises welling blood and fainted, as before. The whole city was in consternation. Doctors could not give any explanation, the priests came to spend the night in prayer, but as soon as midnight approached, all covered awful lethargy. Finally, the regional archbishop himself came and made a ritual of expulsion, but the next morning, the state of widows was worse than ever. She was already on the verge of death. The governor was finally forced to resort to stringent measures to stop the ever-increasing panic in the city. He put on the bridge floor hundreds of Cossacks with orders to stop the ghostly coach at any cost. Exactly at the usual hour, and heard and saw, as the coach of the cemetery close to the city. The officer guards and a priest carrying a cross, stood in front of a barrier along and shouted: "In the name of God and the king - who goes there?". In the window of the carriage was pushed head-remembered and familiar voice replied: "Most of the privy councilor and governor of AK!" At the same moment the officer, the priest and the Cossacks were pushed aside as if by electric current, and a ghostly carriage dashed past them before they time to breathe. Then the archbishop decided to resort to time-honored way - dig a corpse nailed him to the ground oak stake through the heart. This was done with great religious ceremony in the presence of the entire population. They say that the body was found with a full throat blood, with red cheeks and lips. At the moment when the first blow was struck by the end of the stake, a groan came from the corpse and the jet of blood spurted high into the air. The Archbishop said the usual prayers for such cases of expulsion, and the corpse was re-buried in the ground. And since then nothing more was heard of the vampire.

Vampire of Croglin Grendzh
Vampire of Croglin Grendzh
1680
Among the frequently retold cases involving''real''vampires, as it turned out, the most fascinating is the story of the vampire Croglin Grendzha - old house, located in Cumberland, England
The report of the Vampire, first appeared in the August Hare''Story of My Life,''written in recent years before last century. According to Hare, these events occurred during the 1875-1876 period. The house, which at that time was owned by Fisher family, was commissioned Kransvell Amelia and her two brothers - Edward and Michael. In summer, this area was hot, and when all three went to sleep, the woman lay near a window. She closed the window, but did not close the shutters. She could not sleep and noticed that something was approaching the window, then it is something began to scratch, and then pull the window, trying to pull the glass. There is an open window and zabrados inside. The woman froze in horror, and a brown face with burning eyes approached her, grabbed and bitten by the throat.
She screamed, and when her brother rushed to her aid, being hurried away. One of the brothers comforted his sister, and another rushed to pursue a creature, which disappeared behind a wall of a neighboring church. A doctor who later examined the woman, offered her a change of scenery, and the brothers took her for a long time in Switzerland. But then all three returned to Croglin Grendzh. At the next spring being re-appeared. One of the brothers pursued him, shot him in the leg and watched him until the vault at the local cemetery. The next day, along with other citizens brothers went into the vault, which was in a terrible state of neglect. And only one coffin did not seem abandoned. Opening the coffin, they found the body with fresh gunshot wound in his leg. They took the bullet, and his body was burned.
In 1924, Charles G. Harper, basing their assertions on the visit to the area, challenged the book Hare. Harper could not find a place called Croglin Grendzh, although there were two other buildings - Croglin High Hall and Croglin Low Hall, but none podhoilo the description Croglin Grendzha. There was no church - the closest was a mile, and none of the crypt, the corresponding description. In turn, at a later time and write Harper was challenged when Cleve F. Ross visited the area. In a conversation with the local life has been found that Lowe Croglin Hall was just the sort of house, referred to by Hare in its history that a number of years there was a chapel, and the stones of its foundations still exist in 30 years. It seemed Cleve Ross answered all objections Harper.
History Croglin Grendzha continued in 1968, when psychologist - researcher Scott Rogo proposed a new version. He noticed the similarity of the history of the Vampire Croglin Grendzha and the first chapter of''Varney the Vampire''- a popular history of the vampire, first published in 1929, Montague Summers. They are very similar, and it is likely that one of them is based on the other. Rogo has suggested that the entire history Croglin Grendzha no more than a hoax.
Last, the final note in the dispute. Clive Ross again later discussed the incident with local residents, and they said that in writing the Hare was a very significant problem - the story took place not in 1870, and in 1680, almost two centuries earlier. Thus, this fact really puts this story in time before publication''Varney the Vampire''and all it throws very far into the past history and turns it into unconfirmed legend.

The vampire of Highgate 1967-1983
The vampire of Highgate 1967-1983
One of the interludes in the history of the vampire concerns events that took place in a cemetery in the area of Highgate in London in the years from 1967 to 1983.
This cemetery is officially called the cemetery of St. James. It was consecrated Bishop of London in 1839, for 4 days before the celebration of the 20 th birthday of Queen Victoria. In his novel, Bram Stoker, to alter, described it as the burial place of Lucy Westenra (he died in attacks by Dracula).
Modern history began with the Highgate vampire reports of a ghost had been seen at the cemetery at night. While the rumored ghost, occultist - a researcher at the Research Society''vampire''Sin Manchester, received a message on the Sign schoolgirl Elizabeth and her friend, who claimed that they had seen some of the graves were opened, and from there raise the dead. Sign also reported that her nightmares, where something evil is trying to get into her bedroom. A few years later Manchester gathered together a band of similar reports of unusual spectacles associated with this cemetery. In 1969, the nightmares have returned to Voydile, only this time an evil figure actually came into her room. She developed symptoms of pernicious anemia, and the neck revealed two lesions, so reminiscent of the classic vampire bite. Manchester and a friend of Elizabeth treated her as a victim of vampirism, and filled her room with garlic, crosses and holy water. She soon recovered.
Since they all were quite common, perhaps, no one would never have heard of the''message''Highgate, if it were not signs that the cemetery and the nearby park at one time used for rituals, which included the killing of animals. Some dead animals completely lacking the blood, and local newspapers in their headlines asked:''Does walking on the Highgate Vampire?''A little later, Manchester said that talking to another woman who had the same symptoms as a Voydily . A young woman, following a lunatic dream Monchestera led to a group of burial vaults in the cemetery. Manchester told the press that he believes that there is a real Highgate vampire and that it must do, respectively. The newspaper story and subsequent transfer to the independent television channels''Thames''led to the cemetery many curious onlookers. With film fans used it as a movie set for the movie''Vampires in the night.'' On Friday, March 13, 1970 Manchester, and two of his assistants went into the vault, where it was found three empty coffins. They raschertili on the coffin and garlic into each laid a cross. Crypts were sprinkled with salt (used for exorcism) and holy water.
Events have evolved dramatically: in August at the cemetery's body was found a young woman. It turned out that this woman was employed ritual of dealing with a vampire - someone beheaded her and tried to burn. Public outcry demanded that the authorities protect the body close to them from attacks. No sooner had expired a month, as police detained two men who claimed to be the hunters vampires. But while the police were brought in confusion these hunter-amateur vampires, Manchester and entered into another vault and discovered that he considered a real vampire. Not rejecting the body (which is a crime in Britain), he made over him the ritual expulsion and sealed the tomb with cement, mixed up with pieces of garlic.
In the summer of 1970 David Farrant, another hunter-fan vampires, began its activities. He claimed to have seen a vampire, when hunted him with a stake and crucifixion, but was arrested. He became a convert one of the sects of Satanism. It was later convicted on two charges for the destruction of graves in Highgate. In 1978, he acknowledged that the vampire was his own invention. Manchester quickly responded, arguing that the communications took place before and that he was not only privy to the events that have made such a famous Highgate Vampire.
Meanwhile, in 1973, Manchester has launched an investigation regarding a house located near Highgate Cemetery, which had a reputation as a persecuted ghosts. Several times Manchester and his aides went into the house. In the basement they found a coffin, which pulled the back yard. When you open the lid, Manchester saw that same vampire, whom he was four years earlier at Highgate Cemetery. This time he made the expulsion by the body piercing spike, after which it disintegrated in the muddy, smelly stuff, and then burned the coffin. He destroyed the Highgate Vampire. Shortly after that incident, the mansion was demolished and in its place built a residential apartment building.
Consequences of the case''Highgate Vampire''has not ended with his death. In 1980, Finch was reported animals that have been siphoned off all the blood. Manchester believed that the cause was a vampire created by the bite of Highgate Vampire. He met with many people, which met in 1970 and eventually figured culprit - a woman named Louise. He discovered that Louise had died and was buried in the Great Northern London Cemetery. In dreams, Louise came to see him. One autumn evening in 1982 Manchester went to the cemetery. Here he discovered a huge, spider-creature, the size of a cat. He stuck his stake. Drew near dawn, and it turned into Louise, only now she was truly dead. He returned her remains to the grave, and thus put an end to''Highgate Vampire.''
His investigation into Manchester described in the book''Highgate Vampire''and''''Vampire Research Society is circulating a cassette with the evidence about this case.

Among the well-known records of these phenomena were vampires and evidence of William of Newburgh, which is in the XII century, collected many reports of vampires in England
One incident happened in the period of his life and had to do with a man who served his master Alnviyskogo castle. This man, who was known for vicious character, was extremely annoyed nervousness of his wife (with it does not specify that its so worried). Hiding on the roof, directly above his bed, he wanted to watch his wife, but he fell and died the next day.
After his funeral, the city began wandering people. People were afraid to meet with him every day at nightfall were locked in their homes. Since then swept a wave of inexplicable epidemic, after which several people died. It was believed that the disease is caused by a vampire. Finally, on Palm Sunday the local priest gathered a group of the most pious people and active citizens, and went with them to the cemetery. They dug the body, which was filled with blood, and she gushed, when the body was hit with a shovel. Deciding that the body is filled with the blood of victims, the townspeople brought him to town and burned. After this strange epidemic, in which people killed by drinking their blood ceased, and the city returned to his normal life.

PROTOTYPE DRACULA
PROTOTYPE DRACULA
The hero of the legendary novel by Bram Stoker's vampire Count Dracula had a real prototype. He was not a vampire, in the literal sense of the word, and the ruler of Wallachia, Vlad the bloodthirsty sadist Tepesh, nicknamed Dracula.
Why Stocker relates the story of Dracula, or Vlad Impaler with a vampire? The writer was struck by persistence bloody legend Impaler, he expressed the cruelty and composure Vlad the vampire, because they are to an extent not inherent in man.
Vlad Tepes was born in 1431 in the town of Sighisoara, Transylvania. Received in Baptism the name of Vlad, he was later nicknamed Dracula, as his family coat of arms depicted a dragon (in Romanian Dracul''''). Incidentally, another meaning of the word -''the devil''. Vlad Tepesh was the second son of Vlad II - Prince of Wallachia, and later inherited his father's authority and became Vlad III.
In his youth, Dracula was held prisoner by the Turks, from whom he learned about one of the most painful method of execution - impalement. This barbarous punishment consisted in the fact that the person pierced wooden stake or an iron spike and then plunge them into the ground, leaving the victim pierced agonize in terrible agony.
In 1448, after his father and brother died at the hands of mercenaries, Vlad, who by this time turned, probably not more than 18 years, was placed on the Wallachian throne, but two months later fled to the monastery. Once the bastion of Eastern Christianity, Constantinople fell under the blows of the Turks, Vlad in 1456 returned to the legacy of the Wallachian throne, and began to reign, and began his rule was marked by unprecedented and unparalleled in their cruelty ingenuity.
His six-year reign, Vlad III began with the fact that, invited to the capital of the principality Tygrovishte boyars who participated in a conspiracy against his father, with their families, allegedly for a banquet in honor of his accession to the throne. During the feast Dracula asked whether there were many rulers survived boyars. Having received the answer that many, Vlad shouted angrily that all the princes, which they survived, were killed as a result of them, knights, conspiracies, and ordered the arrest of the guests.
Boyar older (those who may be present at the death of his brother and father, or in any way to change it), Prince Vlad III had Pozal to count. More than 500 people were posazhany on stakes and died a horrible death in front of his palace. Others have gone''on stage''for the 80 miles to the town Poenri, where on a hill above the river, he ordered to build a fortress. After a difficult transition, during which the order of Dracula people never stop to rest, and several years of building a fortress almost all the boyars and their relatives died.
Revenge thus killers father and brother, Vlad Dracula started to reform their country. He believed that all citizens should work for the homeland, and therefore despise not only thieves, but the poor, whom he considered lazy and poor, and sick. And since the nature of the prince was strong, that many of them waiting for the same fate as the traitors, the boyars. Acting on the already proven methods Vlad made a feast in his castle for the poor. ''Do you want all at once forget all your pains, worries and anxiety and illnesses and never and I do not want to feel?''- He asked the drunk guests. They are all course happily replied''Yes.'' Dracula then ordered immediately nailed up boards all windows and doors and set fire to the castle. In the fire killed all the guests! His promise - ever free them from worries and anxieties, - the prince thus fulfilled.
Most of all he loved to plant Dracula guilty to count, which gradually broke the internal organs of human death on the stake was terribly painful and often dragged on for several days. Because of the love of Dracula to this type of punishment Romanians nicknamed him Tepeshom, which means Impaler. Vlad treated executions at stake as an art. Sadist invented for the victims of all sorts of different ways of killing: pierced their stakes in the front, rear, side, across the chest, stomach, navel, groin. Stringing them on poles through the mouth, head down, inventing such ways that a person longer suffering. Inventing different kinds of death for people of different age, sex, location. Prepared to specific pins in the form of geometric shapes, especially liked curved. For some unknown reason people put to death all over the village, spreading the pins of different lengths in a circle on the hillside, placing the headman and other local officials from the top, so that they can out in the last survey the misty eyes his former possessions. A single mass executions he preferred. In this case the pins are placed not anyhow, but in the form of different patterns.
One of the most memorable Dracula's atrocities took place April 2, 1459 in Barashove and resulted from a long-running dispute Vlad with local merchants. At the end of the day the prince's troops began rounding up people on the hill near the chapel on the outskirts of the city. All have close to 20 thousand people, mainly representatives of the local nobility. They watched in horror as the soldiers set fire to their houses, and then started planting the traditional procedure on stakes.
Closer to the night side of the hill into a forest of stakes on which poured streams of blood ran down the heads of those who had no place on the points. During the execution of a local nobleman, as passed, shuddered at the horrible smell and the sight of blood. And Dracula, who had a peculiar sense of humor, plant accident at the highest count to be less bothered unpleasant odors. Himself the prince nor the very sight or smell was not disturbed. Moreover, Dracula especially liked to feast during the execution and perform executions during his peers. He sat at a table laden with food and cups of wine, and enjoy watching the unfortunate twist at stake from the unbearable pain. Watching the anguish of his victims, he would say:''Oh what wonderful moments they have!''
On the count of all imprisoned offenders: and thieves, and women, stand to his men that, and husbands, wives, changing, and merchants, were deceiving customers, and the girls soon lost their innocence, and widows who have violated mourning ... They execute even liars. In those days, often on the count were planted even children.
Women were particularly targeted by this monster. The story that once Dracula met poorly dressed peasant. ''Your wife obviously does not deserve you''- he said. And while the farmer tried to persuade the prince that his wife is quite satisfied with it, he ordered to put her on a stake, and the spouse to find a new woman.
One legend had reported up to now the case with one of his mistresses, who also could not avoid death. Catching a gentleman in a grumpy state, she tried to return it in good humor, telling that she is pregnant. Dracula accused her of lying. Wanting to prove that she cheated him, he drew his sword and ripped open her belly. Legend does not say whether he was right in his surmise.
Dracula has applied for a variety of other types of executions: criminals alive peels off the skin, thrown into boiling water, decapitated, blinded, strangled, hung, cut off noses, ears and genitals. After the executions the bodies in the educational purposes exhibited on public display.
During the most savage of them arranged fights in 1460, the day of St. Bartholomew in a city in Transylvania, was planted on the count of 30 000 people.
With such severe measures Dracula reduced crime in the principality to almost zero. Foreigners who came to Wallachia, honesty surprised locals. At the beginning of his reign, Dracula ordered to put the fountain in the main square of Targoviste golden cup from which the day and night anyone could drink. Cup stood in the town square all six years of his reign, and nobody even dared to think, to steal this very valuable thing.
One day a stranger merchant, knowing about the honesty of citizens and confident in the complete preservation of their money, too lazy to move them out of the cart to the house. In the morning he discovered the theft of several coins and complained to Dracula. Prince immediately ordered to announce the main square, that if the money would not be immediately returned, he orders to raze the city to the land. The next morning the stolen money had already been a merchant. That counted them, and finding even the extra coin, went to the palace and informed the Dracula. He said that probably by mistake he returned for one more coin. The prince said that the thief will be caught and impaled. Merchants said that if he had not mentioned the extra coin, then waited for him to suffer the same fate.
Despite the brutality, the people treated his ruler with respect. With draconian measures Dracula not only to eradicate crime in Walachia, but he defended his people from foreigners, which, without further ado.
Here's a summary of''Chronicle''in the transfer of NM Karamzin:
''I was in Muntyanovskoy ground commander, the Christian Greek faith, his name in Wallachian - Dracula, but in our opinion - the Devil. It is tough and wise was that what the name, and such was his life.
One came to him after the Turkish king, and came in, bowed to his custom, and caps with their heads not removed. He said to them:''Why do so: come to the great ruler and a disgrace to me caused?''They replied:''It's a custom, Sire, we and our land.'' And he said to them:''I want your law to confirm that his firm held.'' And he commanded them to nail caps to their heads of iron nails ...
King very wroth, and went to Dracula War, and attacked him with great force. But he gathered all his host, smote the Turks during the night and broke a lot of them. But not able to overcome his small legion huge army and retreated. And he began to examine all those who came to him from the field: who was wounded in the chest, to pay homage to the Knights and his producer, who's back - that told the stake ...
Then the king went to Dracula Ambassador, demanding a tribute. Dracula paid lavish homage to the Ambassador, and showed him his wealth, and told him:''I'm not only willing to pay a tribute to the king, but with all his army and the wealth I want to go to his office, and as I commanded, so and he will serve ...'' And the king was glad, because at that time was waging war in the east. And immediately sent a proclamation throughout all the cities and all the earth, that when Dracula goes, no one any harm he might have caused, but on the contrary, would meet him with honor. Dracula, gathering all the army, got under way, and was accompanied by his royal bailiffs, and gave him great homage. He's deep in Turkish soil for five days' march, suddenly turned back and began to devastate towns and villages, and a lot of people taken captive and killed, some Turks on stakes planted, plowed through the other two, and burned without mercy and babies. Nothing was left on his way, all the land in the desert has turned, and led the Christians who were there and placed in their own land. And he returned back home, capturing untold wealth, and bailiffs tsarist dismissed with honors, addressing:''Go and tell your king all that have seen: how could, gave him. And if it love it, my office, and yet he is ready to serve, how much strength my will.''
In retaliation for the fact that Dracula in 1462 ousted the Turks from the Danube Valley, Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror invaded Wallachia with a huge army, in numbers triple those valahskuyu army. Dracula was forced to withdraw to the capital. Retreating, he burned the villages and poisoned wells. Going to Targoviste, war Sultan saw horrible scene, known in history as''a forest of trees planted on stakes.'' Before the capital of Wallachia stretched a forest of stakes on which Vlad Dracula ordered Pozal about twenty thousand prisoners Turks!
This is very cruel, even for those days the sight so affected the Turks that they are canceling the planned siege, and immediately retreated from Targovishte. But the Sultan left in Wallachia strong army, led by set Radu, Dracula's younger brother, and told him to overthrow Vlad III. Many boyars, who had been standing behind Dracula Mountain, joined parliament and drove to the castle of Vlad Poenri, the one that was built on the bones of them he hated boyars.
The situation seemed hopeless Dracula. My wife preferred the death of Prince disgrace of captivity, and jumped from a high tower. The Turks seized the fortress, but Vlad managed to escape through a secret underground passage. Becoming a refugee, Vlad Dracula went to the king of Hungary, Matthias Corvinus. But instead of help was arrested and imprisoned in the tower. Only four years later he was allowed to settle in the ordinary home. Wallachia all these years, the rules of his younger brother, a Turkish puppet parliament.
Vlad, meanwhile met with the royal family, married one of the sisters of the Hungarian king and switched to Catholicism. Despite the dramatic changes its position, Vlad was the same Dracula. But now it amusing that instead of people seated on the pins of birds and rats. Once in his yard got a thief. Behind him in the house came the Hungarian police to arrest the offender. In the end, that valahsky prince ordered the execution of police for unauthorized appearance in his home.
After the death of parliament in 1474 the Turkish sultan seated on the throne of a different clan valahskih princes. But after two years of Vlad Dracula, enlisting the help of transilvantsev and Moldovans, invaded Wallachia, and seized the princely throne. But not for long. Wallachia again decided to regain the Turks, and in the battle of Bucharest at the end of December 1475 Vlad Dracula was killed. At that time he was 45 years old. They say that Dracula is killed by own boyars. To persuade the sultan's death sworn enemy, the head of Vlad Dracula, mounted to the spear (other sources - canned in honey), were taken to Istanbul and hung over the gate. The decapitated body of Vlad was buried in Snagovskom monastery, located on the island.
Until now, no one with certainty can not say what the approximate number of people executed Count Dracula. By some estimates, this number is much higher than 100000! One of his subjects, hiding from the wrath of the host in Germany, said there is detail about the atrocities of Dracula. In particular, he said that to preserve his youth and strength of Vlad III (to the article, as Erzhabet Bathory) bathed in the blood of their victims. During the life blood prince Dracula in 1463 in Germany published a book''History of governor Dracula,''which describes in detail all of his fanaticism.
After the release of this German book stories about bloodthirsty Dracula spread widely throughout Europe. The fact that Vlad Dracula liked to bathe in the blood, made him the chief vampire of all time.

Different systems to explain the phenomenon VAMPIRE
Not so long ago in Paris, published a book - an essay Professor of the Paris Medical University Vinslu "Uncertainty signs of death and injury from hasty burial, with the addition of Doctor of Medicine Brugherio. In this essay can stay on the observation that many persons found dead and then buried for a long time lived in time when they assisted.
In April 1740 Professor Vinslu defended the thesis that the experiments of surgery more than anything else contributed to the discovery of little-known signs of questionable deaths. Many cases are known, wrote Vinslu when the signs of death are very questionable, and points at the same persons who are declared dead and buried, but, in time saved, long lived.
Dr. Brugherio completed this thesis scientists observations also indicate a view Vinslu. Then we use this book only suitable for our purpose, and quite authentic facts.
Dr. Herbert Mayo in the book "Truth in the popular superstition - in the letters" explains vampirism apparent death and fatal syncope. To indicate the cessation of vital activity, he uses the expression: a deadly swoon, deadly trance, or ecstasy. In that essay Mayo, the state of ecstasy and its various forms. He distinguishes ecstatic sleep and wakefulness ecstatic. Ecstasy, which expresses the total abnormal ratio between the heart and nervous system, has, to quote Mayo, its phase or the extent consistent with normal wakefulness in its natural state. Natural sleep is divided into three types: a deep, heavy sleep of exhaustion, strong, ordinary, healthy, deep sleep to light sleep still healthy and sick. Similarly, the ecstatic dream threefold: a deadly ecstasy; long ecstasy; beginning or initial ecstasy. But when in ecstasy, all the elements reach the limit of large size, the differences of three degrees of ecstatic sleep and peculiar to each of these phenomena Distinguish between increasing and are enhanced. The difference between the imaginary and ecstatic death Mayo explains: "In many cases of apparent death of the well-known deadly effects are struggling with the life principle, because the latter prevents the flow and force of the first, which is not the case with fatal ecstasy or faint. Deadly ecstasy, or a fatal frenzy there is a positive state - a period of rest, the continuance of which can sometimes be defined in advance, although it is not clear. So, sometimes a patient suddenly wakes up and sometimes gets well and often, as it represents a stationary machine, it comes into effect again. Basis fatal fainting or swoon is the cessation of heartbeat, respiratory function and voluntary movements, feeling, reason and herbal body functions usually go out of business. These phenomena are closely linked and the cessation of bodily warmth. He describes this phenomenon as follows: fatal ecstasy is a sign of death. Cardiac activity stops, breathing stops, all signs of continuing sensitivity and consciousness disappear, the body temperature drops. The ecstatic individual is very much like a lifeless corpse, the joints are fixed, the whole body flexible and curved, this is sometimes associated more and convulsive stupor. The only way to know whether to continue life - it is expected outcomes. Tedo need to put in a moderately warm room, and accelerate the decomposition of the body if the death occurred, or to keep the vital spark, if it still remains in the body, and the need to guard the body permanently. The book by Herbert Mayo examples of fatal fainting spells, as well as examples of visions in this state and made comments on measures to prevent premature burial. The author in this regard says: "Very often fatal syncope is expressed in the sudden and unexplained deaths, grief gives rise to family and friends - and at the same time, excessive jealousy, family is very easy to promote hasty anatomy
If the body does not wake up and at the same time last happy fashion, then this does not imply that a spark of life in it completely extinguished. This thought is too sad, but because it necessitates fortify nekroskopicheskie study if there is undeniable proof that life is completely extinguished ... The great practical importance of the issue is how to know that the body has stopped life? Complete absence of common signs of life is not enough to prove that life has stopped. The body may be quite cooldown: heart rate - to stop his heartbeat, the breath - stop, all motion - stop; members, due to convulsion may stiffen; szhimatelnye muscles - lose their elasticity and blood at the opening of the veins may not leaking; eyes - become glassy, may come a private lifeless, due to which there is the smell of a corpse, and, despite all this, the body can live. In the present state of science the only way to find out what life is truly and completely stopped, it is to wait for chemical decomposition, which is found to change colors, the blue and green on the belly cavity and anterior part of neck and at the same time trupovom smell. "
To move from these observations to vampirism, Dr. Mayo explains it, on the one hand, syncope, who found him epidemic in certain times and in certain areas, on the other hand, psychological factors, and, moreover, in connection with fatal ecstasy.

Chapter 9
''Thesis about the appearance of angels, demons and ghosts, as well as the appearance of vampires in Hungary, Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia (1746)''
Chapter 9
The popular belief about thunderstruck So-called BRUKOLAKAH. The Story of BRUKOLAKE ON THE ISLAND OF MICS.
Some have speculated that thunderstruck not perish. This view Zaccai. Pare and Komine, who believed as the imperishable thunderstruck, felt that they covered and penetrated, and they zip through the sulfur and replaces the salt in the body.
In 1727, in a pit near a hospital in Quebec, were discovered intact body of nuns who have died from five to twenty years ago, in which, despite the fact that they were covered with lime, blood flowed from the open seats.
Quite a common opinion was that the dead under the curse father or mother were often lively day and night, talking with them, called and harassed them. Leo Allyatsius tells many such facts. In connection with these events, he, among other things, notes that residents of the island of Chios, when he heard the first time of calling their voice, do not respond out of fear that it is a spirit or ghost. If the call is repeated, they say, it does not brukolak, that is not a ghost in their own language, but if the answer to the first and second call, the ghost disappeared, but said definitely dying.
To get rid of the evil geniuses, it was customary for the rule: to dig up the corpse of a person appears before the commission and certain rites burn it. After that, they believed, the phenomenon of ghosts will not happen again. I also believe that the dead are criminals and villains left their graves, that the phenomenon they had seen for fatal or answered them, and that the demon is their bodies so that with their help to scare the living and to deprive them of life.
In addition, the Greeks claim that these deaths are walking at night, their food is prepared and eaten. G. Rico in its history on the current status of the Greek Church wrote about the many dead bodies, healthy and red, the veins that after forty days after death the blood was just as fresh and as young people with the choleric temperament. It is so well known that one can recollect many such facts in full detail. G. von Tournefort says even on the so-called rite of digging on the island brukolaka Miko (in the Greek archipelago), where he attended on Jan. 1, 1701. Here are his words:
"I was an eyewitness on the island Miko horrendous act perpetrated on one of the dead, who, according to the islanders, are after the burial. The man in question, the islander, by nature morose and cantankerous. It is found in a field killed by someone unknown and manner. Two days later, after he was buried in the town church, a rumor spread that the dead appear during the night, part of the house, overturning the dishes, puts out the fire, enough people behind their backs, etc.
At first laughed at, but things took a serious turn when they started to complain and and respectable people. Many people enjoy the trust and respect among the inhabitants of the island, confirmed the authenticity of which lay scattered rumors, and, of course, not without reason. Even during the commission of the liturgy in the church, which was buried this dead, he did not abandon their antics and thought reform. After a long debate by the representatives of the city, the priests and monks have decided to ancient custom, which was not known to me, wait for the end of the first nine days after the burial.
On the tenth day in the church, where it was buried the body, made the liturgy, to exorcise the demon, to settle, as they thought in the body. After Mass, dug out the body, to do it rite expelled the demon. We decided to remove a dead heart, and the city butcher, decrepit and scratchy, began by saying that instead of exposed breasts and belly for a long time digging in the guts, finding the unknown. Finally he was told that you have to cut the diaphragm and the heart finally removed. The body issued a strong smell, and so lit incense, but the smoke mingled with the fetid odor, has stepped up a stink.
Human imagination, brought the spectacle, began to be a vision. We thought that the foul-smelling smoke emanates from a corpse, constantly saying that the tomb lies brukolak, one whose name was capable of shaking the vaults of the church, many of those present found the blood of this unfortunate fresh and red. Butcher swore that the blood is very warm. It concluded that the devil supported in a dead life, and this conclusion is in close connection with the submission of brukolake. Many swore they noticed, as if the body is the same as soft as before, when he was transferred from the field to the church for burial, which, consequently, he brukolak. I stood near the corpse and could therefore correctly observe, smell my heavily suffered from the terrible stench of the corpse. The question that I think about the deceased, answered, that I believe in the ordinary corpse.
Wanting to moderate their darkened imagination, or at least weaken the excitement, I said: it is not surprising that the butcher felt a certain warmth, and fumbling in her guts already decayed; stink as usual, as the dung when it razroyut. As for the red blood cells, which can be seen on his hand dead - is not something else, like a foul-smelling filth.
Then decided to go to the shore and there burn the heart of the deceased to stop brukolaka, who beat people, break down doors, broke windows, tore her dress in women, wasted mugs and bottles. From the latter shows that the dead man suffered greatly from thirst. It was strange that the house of the consul, in which we lived, was spared brukolakom. This fact only proves the sad state of mental development of the islanders. Imagination was all painful, disordered, whole families to escape snares brukolaka, left their homes and carried off the bed on the outskirts of the city for the night. The attack every night meet general lamentation, and even sensible people fled from their homes. On the general prejudices, I decided not to speak, not words, and it avoided the danger of being recognized by non-believers, as well as caustic ridicule. His behavior I do not blame the fact that it was impossible to explain to the people of his mistake. Consider that I doubt the truth of the fact of presence in the city brukolaka, came up to me and talk me in my unbelief. They wanted to assure me that the deceased brukolak, according to the butcher and missionary P. Richard, was a Jesuit. "This is a Catholic - they said - therefore, you should believe him." I would rather continue to bother if I was rejected and this is the last, so convincing, in their opinion, the proof. Each morning comes repeating one and the same comedy: we were treated to stories about new tricks, which practiced a corpse, and complained of being committed by their outrage.
Some townsfolk believed that full security is not performed a substantial part of the rite. In their view, ought to make a Mass once be pulled at the heart of the accident. Only if this precaution, they thought, the devil certainly would have been expelled and, no doubt, no longer would be able to return back to the corpse. And as the ceremony began the liturgy, the devil has had ample time to leave and then return to the body of the deceased.
Despite the fact that so many thought, it has not improved. They gathered in the mornings and evenings, argued, the processes of three days and three nights, priests, parishioners were forced to fast, at home and doors are sprinkled with holy water and poured it into the mouths of the poor brukolaka. Frequently visiting the municipal government, I have always insisted that the well-ordered state in such cases, ordered the night guard strictly observe all that happens in the city. I finally followed the Council and on the first night seized several vagrants, who apparently took part in the night disturbances. Two days later, the tramp, when they were released from prison and resumed their antics, considering them a reward for suffering in prison: emptying a jug of wine in their homes, left for the night. Citizens again all attributed to brukolaku and resorted to prayer.
One day, after prayers stuck a few swords into the grave of the deceased, which in that day, at the request of relatives, dug up and buried back three or four times. Was at the time on the island Albanian argued that in such cases is absurd on the part of Christians to use the sword. "You are blind, you do not see, - he said - that the sword at the point of contact form a cross and thereby impede the devil out of the corpse." Adoption of the educator did not have, however, success. Brukolak does not repaired, and all were in terrible distress, and did not know how to get rid of him, when suddenly, as if by common agreement, decided to burn brukolaka. This, of course, is better than to leave the island, as some think. In fact, many families packed up their belongings with the intention to go to the island Cyr or Tina in the Greek archipelago.
By order of the municipal authorities of the deceased's body was moved to the top of the mountain on the island of St. George, where he laid out a large fire of pine wood, so that the corpse was consumed slowly. The remains of the unfortunate engulfed flames. It was January 1, 1701. Then stop complaining about brukolaka, said that the devil has cleverly deceived, sang songs and cursed the devil.
All the inhabitants of the archipelago were of the opinion that the devil can only revive the dead-Greeks. Residents of Santorini is very afraid of persecution Latin bishop as much and brukolaka. The fact that the island of St. George, they did not invite any priest when burned corpse, out of fear that the bishop would require money for what they are without his permission, dug up and burned the corpse. "All the above is sufficient for our purpose of the story, the background Tournefort.
Thomas Bartholin said: ancient northern people were convinced, as if the dead were often in his youth, clothed in his body, and gives many examples of this kind. To this he adds that some fought with ghosts, who harassed and insulted people, and about their graves planted trees. Thus, Gretter, apeared after death, decapitated, the bodies of other dead dug their stakes, and then buried in the ground.
Frequently snatched the dead from their graves and burned. So done, for example, with a ghost Gardusom, which found the cause of all miseries occurred during the storm.
According to William Malmesbyuri, the British thought that the evil of the soul after death, return to the bodies of those to whom they belonged in life, through the demon, which gives them the necessary movement.
William Neybrizhsky, who lived in the second half of the XII century, said: man, buried in Berwick, every night rose from the grave and caused great concern whole neighborhood. Another known that he supposedly boasted that he would bother to live as long as it does not burn. For this operation, have chosen ten brave, strong young men who dug it, hacked to pieces and burned at the stake. Once a corpse was dug, one of the gravediggers said: Dead Man's impossible to burn until until he plucked up heart. His proposal was accepted and the corpse thrown into the fire, turned into ash and was not more.
The ancient pagans believed that the dead bodies in general are deprived of rest and not protected by spells as long as they are not affected by the flame or rot in the ground.
Laplander tell about the many ghosts, who were the local inhabitants against their will, forced them to speak and eat with them. When Laplander have made sure that the souls of deceased relatives worried about them, then burned the body, believing that the only way they can get rid of troublesome visitors. Laplander generally were of the opinion that the souls of the dead are dangerous for living as long as they do not pass into other bodies. Demons and ghosts wandering around the mountains, rocks, lakes and rivers in Lapland, paid homage to the same respect, what the Romans paid homage fawn, forest gods, nymphs and tritons.
Thus, we find the instructions on the dead, who after the burial back to life, even before the XII century and in other countries, especially the northern ones. However, these sagas are too far from our subject: Vampires, of which we have referred, almost have nothing to do with all this.
