History Arnold Paola.

History Arnold Paola.
One of the most famous cases of vampirism in the XVIII century, linked to Paula Arnold, who lived in the territory of present-day Yugoslavia (then the land was part of the Habsburg Empire). At this point save the document, which was signed by the Austrian imperial commission, consisting of three military surgeons and two officers.

Paola was a young man who had returned to his village near Belgrade Meduegna spring 1727 after serving his military service. He sank to the ground, bought a piece, got a farm, made plans to marry a beautiful girl Nina, daughter of a wealthy neighbor.

Paola was always cordial relations with its neighbors, and they could not see that the guy was something wrong. Nina also felt that he was preoccupied, and once asked him directly about the reason. Paula admitted that he pursued the idea of premature death. It all began during his military service in Greece. There he was visited by an immortal essence, he found her grave and tried to drive out the devil from the body, but failed. It is for this reason that he refused military service and returned to the village so young.

For a while, it seemed, Paola did not care. But somehow when he fell from the hay stacks, injured and died soon after. A month later, there were rumors that Paula walks at night. People complained that he pursues them, and many actually died soon after. So, he could not escape the damnation of vampirism. After two and a half months, the residents decided to dig up the body.

Together with a group of villagers went to the cemetery, two officers sent from Belgrade, where the authorities are interested in the mysterious case, as well as the already mentioned military surgeons, the drummer boy, who carried their tools, and the old sexton and his assistants. After removing the lid from the tomb, they saw how it was then written in the record that "the body is turned to one side, the jaws wide open, and the blue lips wet with fresh blood, which flows to a trickle over the mouth." Further, the report says, "Fearless gravedigger grabbed the body and put it right. It soon became clear that we face - a vampire. It looked almost like a living ... At a time when the gravedigger touched the body, the outer skin is peeled off and under it was a new and new nails ... "People fear hit, the drummer collapsed. The dead man began to rub the garlic, his body pierced with a stake, "with the corpse gave a terrible cry, and carmine gushing blood." After that unearthed the bodies of four people, the cause of death, which was deemed to be Paola. They also pierced with stakes, to prevent them from returning to the world of the living. And then the remains of five burned and the ashes buried in consecrated ground.

For a time, the measures have helped. Messages about vampires in the village vanished. But again some people have died, and again the rumors, like the former. Authorities appointed a commission tasked to open the graves of the dead and recently a medical examination of the bodies. In the documents of the Commission, dated 1732, can be found a description of a very interesting fact: perfectly preserved bodies of women and children who died in the months before the exhumation, while the bodies of others who had departed to the other world together with the first, is almost completely decomposed. Commission members pierced sticks all suspicious corpses, beheaded and burned them. At this time, cases of vampirism really stopped.
